Pen boxes, brush pot? and lidded pot...Chinese
« on: April 19, 2010, 05:29:16 PM »
Presume these are lacquered papier mache, computer won't do French accents, and they are Chinese,no marks, any idea of their age? the pens came with the boxes and the small red metal container has pencil leads inside,Keith.

Are they just lacquered items, or paper mache?  What does the inside of the box look like?

Thanks

Good question, the insides look just like the outside, always thought they were lacquered papier-mache ,stumped as usual,

I think some things were just lacquered, and then some paper mache was also lacquered.  Victorians were big on Paper mache items.  Some Chinese items I just find to be highly lacquered for the shine...

...But I could be wrong, as just a guess here........can you post a pic of the inside??

The seated lady on the ashtray looks Japanese, not Chinese IMHO.

Some of these were wooden as well, quite often you can tell by the weight I think...
Cheers!

The boxes are not quite heavy for their size, the plate, about 9 in's across,is light,so I'd presume the boxes are wood and the plate papier-mache?
