Title: Huge stoneware lidded pot similar to Celtic Pottery
Post by: Anne E.B. on May 17, 2008, 05:44:33 PM: This is a whopper, 11" high and weighing nearly 3kg. The pattern looked familiar and I thought may be Celtic Pottery down in Mousehole/Newlyn, which would make sense given where I live (give a mile or so...) Celtic Pottery appears to have been in existence from 1960s to 70s and started by Bill and Maggie Fisher. They decorated their wares with strange bird shapes in their Celtic range. This one has similar patterning, but I can't make out a bird, and the Celtic ones are done with brown glaze unlike this one in blue.

Can anyone throw any light on it please? Is there another pottery who made similar patterned pots? Or could this be an early piece from Celtic Pottery? Celtic Pottery used paper labels unfortunately, and mine has no markings on the base, although the glaze could have covered any mark.

Same shape and size - without a lid. Similar looking glaze. With a little imagination, mine could be a bird motif.

Will make some further enquiries...

Do these American storage pots look anything like it?

I think you might be right that mine could be older than the Celtic pieces. Mine has a lid and a holder(? not sure what you call it) for the lid to sit on. The Celtic ones are vases and not lidded. The unglazed interior is a lighter, more yellowy colour than the unglazed areas that can be seen on the base, which are darker. The same also for un glazed areas around the rim and on the bit that the lid sits on.

I might just take it along to David Ley's free evaluation day on Monday. They are auctioneers down in Penzance and flog a lot of ceramics amongst other things. That's if I can find a wheelbarrow or a forklift truck!!! I might also take the "Troika(ish)" one too.

Lots to think about. May be worth me contacting that American link (and the local link that you gave) with some pics. to see what they think also.

Post by: Anne E.B. on August 11, 2008, 12:21:33 PM: Update about the pot. Just got back from David Ley Auctioneers' evaluation session. I took the pot along with some glass. The guy said that the pot was Continental tin-glaze and possibly as little as 20 years old. The lid doesn't belong to it and looks to be a Bernard Leach piece. He said it would fetch around ?15-20 at auction, so I've decided to keep it. Doesn't seem worth auctioning by the time their commission is taken off, and I do like it. So it staying on the fire hearth where it looks quite at home ;)

Spot on! and as often as not they dont have a clue (despite trying to convince otherwise) always take thier opinions with a healthy pinch of salt.
