I've had this for years and I've just dug it out again before putting it on the carboot, but have never found out what it actually is. Its made in a 2 part mould and is really very old. The rim is uneaven and I would think it had some kind of lid at one time. Its handpainted and the clouds and waves are outlined in relief (slipware?). There are no marks underneath, but there is a squiggle that may or may not be a mark. If I use my imagination it could read it as J/P or D/P. This appears on the side with the smaller boat and to the left of it.
Any guesses what it might have been and where it originated?
TIA :)

I might be wrong but I don't think it's had a lid.The shape is very Art Nouveau isn't it? Also, I'm not sure if the decoration is moulded or tube lined.
Can we have a photo of the base please?

I think it looks like a Dutch sailing barge... and I would say the decoration is tubelined

'Tubelined' decoration would make sense. Presumably that's piped on like icing?
Nothing much is happening on the base apart from more crazing.
-
Certainly is. There's four pages of Dutch marks here (http://www.oldandsold.com/pottery/holland1.shtml) Maybe you can find the squiggle on the side

Ooh thanks! Great website - now in my favourites ;D
I've had a good look and I'm all squiggled out :czy: No luck I'm afraid, but it could just be a squiggle and not an actual mark.
The Antique Road Show's coming down this way next month. Unfortunately (or may be that should be fortunately 8)) I'll be on hol. otherwise I could have taken a box full of things ;D (mostly rubbish I suspect... :24:)
