Title: Butterfly money boxes - Carlton Ware?
Post by: Anne E.B. on August 15, 2008, 10:13:05 AM
Are these butterfly money boxes Carlton Ware?  Retroselect show some of the money box designs made by C.W. and list some also but not all. Seen here http://www.retroselect.com/Carlton%20Ware/Carlton%20Ware%205.htm

The butterflies look very 70s, and that would tie in with the C.W. ones (c.1969).  The bungs are slightly different from the ones shown, but that might not be significant.  There are no markings.  Mothercare are currently selling butterfly money boxes, but these are very different from mine.

TIA ;)

They do look very Carlton-ware like Anne.  I've had a mooch around but can't find any mentions of a CW butterfly money box though. I take it they don't have a bottom stamp?  What do the bungs look like - can we have a picture of them as well please?

Thanks for looking Anne.  I've got some more Carlton Ware bits in the garage somewhere, so I'll have a look and compare to see if they are of a similar quality, even though they are different items.  I've got an orange cube cruet set (3 pieces) as seen on Retroselect, one of which isn't marked in any way.  The butterflies are unmarked.  One of the money boxes has got a rogue piece of china stuck to the bottom and I suspect that it might not have passed Carlton Ware's quality control.  I'll post a pic. of the base, plus the bungs tomorrow when the light is good.   ;)

Righty oh ;D   The Carlton Ware that I already have (eventually found it), is IMHO better finished underneath than the butterflies.    Is 'frit' the correct term to use in ceramics for rogue bits?  The pic. below shows the poor finish on one.  The plastic bungs have a number 34 on them.

Those bungs look too new to be 1970s to me apart from the shoddy bottom, not Carltonware methinks

Ah well, never mind.  I think someone's copied the C.W. money box design idea and not very well at that  :boohoo:

Yep, I'd tend to agree with Christine looking at that bottom, Anne. It doesn't look as good as other pieces I've seen.  The number on the stopper will be the mould number so not helpful really.
