As an update to this thread, Max and I went to see Ken Townsend's widow, Heather, on Wednesday (17th Dec). Her son, Jeremy, was also there and is a very talented artist in his own right, although having a totally different style to his father.

It gave us a chance to see Ken's abstract work, his early work, some other tile designs that were never produced, and some of his animal sculptures. All highly delightful and most enjoyable to see. Owls, apparently, were Ken's favourite and you can see them crop up fairly often. Funnily enough, I do have several owl glass sculptures.

I will update the web site when time permits - probably over the Christmas period.

The chestnut soup we were treated to was also a revelation!

Anne: you do, of course, provide the server space! ;D

Nice to see you back here David, it's been a while! ;)

By the way, I picked up one of the Townsend Chance plates a couple of weeks back - it's the Scenes of London horseguard one.

Thanks: I am busy on another book project of course, but which is moving along very nicely.

The Chance glass ones only seem to crop up now and then, but the tiles are quite hard to get hold of. I know someone who has the whole series of 30-odd tiles, including a whale that has never been documented until now. I am still looking for the tiles, as I know there will be some variations. According to Heather, earlier ones are stencilled and then hand-painted, so there will be some noticable variations to the later (and more numerous) silk-screen-printed ones.

See the Sad Lion and Robin 2 on this page (http://www.kenneth-townsend.co.uk/i-menagerie.html). I feel these are probably earlier stencilled ones.

Here are some tiles (http://www.kenneth-townsend.co.uk/special_tiles.html) you should never find!
