Title: Help identifying these vases
Post by: Deco Delilah on December 31, 2008, 01:49:01 PM
Hello,
I bought these about 16 years ago from a house clearance company. The seller knew nothing about them. If you look closely the relief designs form a body with a face. They appear fairly old, though I am unsure of their exact age.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
Many thanks!
Amy

Hi Amy and welcome to the board. Your pots look like owls I think, but I don't recognise them at all. Hopefully someone else will. :)

Welcome to the board. Do they both have the same base markings?

Nice looking pots.  Look to have been made in a 2 part mold from the pics. if I'm not mistaken - not that that helps unfortunately.

Hello everyone,
Other people have also said they look like owls, whereas others see a female form. Only one pot has the markings. I agree that they were made with a two part mold. Someone once suggested slip?

Silly question here, but does anyone else see something on the far right hand side of the pot...

Very faint......RA......?......or B4.....?....A4......?

They are near the right edge, near the center of the right side.  About the same size as the other numbers, but they are very, very faint.  You sort of notice what looks like a *A* or a *4*first at the edge -- then in front of it it looks like another letter...

Anyone else see what I am referring to..... or am I  :czy:

You are not  :czy: Rose :kissy: and I can see what you mean, but I think they are just coincidental IMHO.

I was watching a t.v. prog. yesterday called 'Flog It' where items are taken to auction. Referring to a piece of pottery, one of the 'experts' said that the number underneath referred to the production number i.e. the number made, but that was most probably on English pottery.  Continental ones e.g. old W.German pots have numbers but they refer to the pattern/design number.  Sorry, just thinking outloud ;)

Hi, yes, West-Germany might be a possibility as the base is painted black like the ones on this site...
