A Staffordshire figure, rarely marked. I suspect that this could be a fake, i wouldn't like to say for sure though.

the condition of the piece suggested that it may be a repro' but when I looked at the dirt around the crazing and base rim it seemed like an old piece...an old repro perhaps?

Could be. Most fakes usually have painted base rims to make them look dirty. Just looking at the crazing on the base it seems to have a very regular pattern and it's heavily stained. Not always a good sign.
