Hmmm that mark's very hard to see isn't it? The last three letters look like they might be SAY or SOY but I can't make out the earlier ones. Try dusting some light powder like talc or flour into the mark to highlight the letters and see if it makes it more readable, Keith.

Thanks Anne will try that,it's about time I found out where it's from I've only had it for 20 years!

The base, the impressed mark and the colours used are similar Linthorpe pottery. Might be worth a Google...

I must admit though, there were similar things coming from Belgium.

I just remembered something printed in Millers collectable price guide 1997-98...

Quote
After the Linthorpe factory closed down their moulds were purchased by Daison. who made copies of Dresser's Linthorpe designs, as late as the 1930's.

The mark does look as if it read's 'Daison'? I'm not sure what their marks look like. The Daison company was base in Torquay, i believe.

Is it made from red terracotta earthenware?

One more thing Keith -- also READ this link here.....it may help IF you put the object under a direct light (very close) and the camera (try with, and without flash) sometimes camera can see more than the EYE can when it is snapped when DIRECTLY under a very bright light.......like 2 inches away.
  Worth a try...

Just a suggestion -- and DO take a pic, and post it here for us to see...

I wondered if it said FOREIGN at first, but it looks like there might be numbers instead of letters in there, so I'm baffled still.

Hi there.....just a guess again...

But I really think the Work does start with an F, but not sure it says FOREIGN there either.

I think it starts with an F because it looks like it, AND in the newest pic that you posted (pic #1) there looks like a incised small *f* on the LEFT side of the written word there.

It looks like there is also a scratched small *f* on the Left side - can YOU see it too....and we clearly have a number of what looks like to be 107.

So we are getting somewhere.....

 :x-fingers:

Added:  Wild Guess.....FULPER maybe (???)

Does you camera has a close-up lens (flower image) on it.  Like I said, put this real, real close to a light with the light directing above the lettering (not turned so you can see) and snap a pic -- try several at different angles really close to the light.....as the light picks up shadows below.  Do not worry what you think you are trying to see.....let the camera do the work, as it (sometimes) picks up more than we can see.

It is trial and error....

It does look like a F at the start....and either a Y or a V at the end.

FURJSOY
FURTSAY
FUR/SOY ????

Have you tried taking a a light pencil etching over it?

Used to see quite a few like this (large, simple forms, straight necks, deep glazes)  posted on the old Tias Art Pottery group. They were usually thought to be Belgian 1890's-1920's which was my first thought on this piece.  However the other suggestions here are interesting.
If it does say "foreign" that could indicate a little earlier ie before the 1887 Merchandise Marks Act.
Just some more food for thought for you.
Peter

Looks to me like it says FRANCE.

Hmmm I'm not sure... it seems to have 7 characters - I still feel it might say FOREIGN rather than a country name.

You may be right, but this is what it looks like to me (pardon my sketchy photoshop mouse writing):

Hard to say....but the detectives are hard at work here ....lol

Keith -- try the bright light again at different angles.  So the lettering is right even with the light, and not on any angle at all.  Try this under the light both with the flash, and without the flash -- as sometimes the bright light, and the Flash will help to pick up the marks under the heavy glaze....

Even try a UV light -- I mean, why not...see what happens....

If you do like me -- when I do this under a real bright light (about 4 -6 inches away) and take several (several shots) at lots of different angles...with flash, and without flash...then I load them to the computer to look through them better, than reviewing them on the screen of my camera.

Gosh, sometimes when I do this, I have taken like 25 pics -- but then I load them onto the Computer and go through them all -- as I can tell better WHAT the camera pick up than my EYE did.

have you tried taking a pic close to the light, with a Magnifying glass held up to your camera (like I have done here, and on GMB)??  I know a person needs like 8 arms to do it -- but might be worth it....

Looking forward to seeing what you get....
