3 inches high,pretend hallmarks,is there something missing?
-
3" tall, what on earth would you use a burner so small for I wonder? Are the side pieces / handles? hollow Keith? I'm trying to figure if something might have slotted into them - are they open at the bottom as well (to keep them cool maybe?
-
The side pieces are hollow and with no holes in the base, wondered if it was for a dinning table?
-
What the H*LL is that?
My only guess would be a cigarette lighter. Have NO idea as never seen anything like it. Any of these Pretend marks (here): http://www.925-1000.com/Fgerman_hanau_marks_01.html
and here I found RH over DH marks, scroll down:
http://www.silvercollection.it/ENGLISHSILVERMARKSXRDUE.html
says there:
RH over DH
Robert Hennell and David Hennell,
London 1801 hallmark
Or could it be this (maybe the EH looks like another RH on your item) This is from the same link page above:
RM over EH into a quatrefoil
Richard Martin & Ebenezer Hall -Martin, Hall & Co- ,
Broad Street Park, Sheffield
Sheffield 1866 hallmark
???

Wow, now that's an old burner!
You might want to look into some of the Christopher Dresser designs because i think this looks like an arts and crafts piece, perhaps some kind of unique vessel was fitted on top or something.

Have emailed someone at one of the 'silver' sites and they said they would have a look at it and let me know(if they know that is) what it's for,
-
Heard back from them,no luck but they gave me a link to another site,I emailed them, nothing except a suggestion that it might be a 'chafing' dish burner, had to google that, have since heard from another site,no luck but they have given me yet another link to try :hb: :czy:
