Title: Chinese Carving ??
Post by: antiquerose123 on January 03, 2011, 04:50:22 AM
 :) Hi there:
Found this little item.  It is about 3 inches high, and looks to be Carved.  Not sure of the material -- might it be (Chinese) Soap Stone??  Are there different types of Soap stone from different parts of the World?  Looks like a lion, or a Mythology lion of some sort...but ugly looking lion.  Not like the Lion King we seen years ago in the Movie....LOL. Not sure why the base is the way it is -- if that where is was held onto something while being carved.....or if there was something there once....or it sat on something else.....or maybe had a rubber stamp (seal) there to mark things ???  I do not know.

Anyone know about these items?  Are they old, worth collecting, or have any value?  Any info would be greatly appreciated here!!  I think it is Chinese -- or maybe Japanese ????

If it is real soapstone -- how does one tell?  Or if older or newer?   I am assuming it is soapstone, but not really sure......

Help.... :x-fingers:

Definitely chinese. If not soapstone, might be (oh my brain is fried) resin.

 :)
Been hunting around here -- this might be what you call (either a) FU Dog, or FOO DOG.....or some places call it a FOO (or FU) Lion.

Do not think it is a resin, as it feels like a Stone....and heavy.  Found something somewhere that called something like this *Balindong Soapstone* but not sure yet.

Still trying to figure it out....???

You're right Rose it's a 'temple dog' fo or foo,shi-shi in Japan, soapstone has a soft almost waxy feel to it.

Hi Keith -
Our foo-puppies look the same.  I will have to dig mine out and give it a feel again.  You color looks different.  Were these carved in different Soapstone, or things?

Eg. Is all soapstone one color even in different regions?  I dunno know....   ???
