Title: Can anyone help ID this old jug?
Post by: Calusa on April 01, 2011, 08:04:13 PM
I recently found this old earthenware jug. It seems very old, but I can find no info or pictures of similar items. It is about 9 1/2" tall and 6 1/2" wide. It has an appliqu?d design of grapevines with "beaded" borders. The design appears to have been colored with a whitish gesso-like substance as well as a few bands around the circumference in various areas. The white has mostly worn away. There are a few stamped numbers and letters on the base which seem to be "08, 562, C (possibly an "S" before the C). It is wheel thrown with the neck being a separate piece that was attached. It has been suggested that it may be German in origin, but I'm not sure. I am also curious about the age of the piece. I'd appreciate any info or observations.

Hi there, and Welcome again.

Really nice item there.  The marks on the bottom are they written, or stamped on marks?  I can not tell.  Can you take another pic of them, if possible....and maybe try direct sunlight.

Looks very nice.....almost like a Greek Feel to me -- but that is a Guess.  I will see what I can find here.... ;) ;)
