Title: Cloisonne // Enameled Vases ?
Post by: antiquerose123 on September 29, 2011, 09:04:38 AM
Hi, and I can't remember IF I had posted this before or not....but I could not find when I did an search, so I  :x-fingers: not.

After hearing that keith likes this type of Vases, I wonder if he (or anyone) can tell if these are good cloisonne or not.  If they are old, or just in the years past.  I have no idea about them, but they look real in my eyes, as near the bottom there is some enameling that has come out (just a couple pieces) so it does look like Cloisonne IMHO, but what do I really know.

Any info, or ideas on them?  Are they good Cloisonne or not -- as I am not sure what to look for -- or how you tell if they are New or old.  No idea at all.  I am just guessing they are older due to some small missing pieces near the bottom that (might) have happen over time from being moved around, or packed -- or just the years gone by?

Hello Rose, these are Chinese cloisonne, not very old I'd say looking at how bright the brass is,maybe 5-10 years?just picked up a damaged Japanese cloisonne vase,it's 14.5 inches high!

Nice pieces, Rose but as Keith said quite modern.  By the way do not use them as vases - most that have been tend to fall apart from seepage damaging the wire dividers.
That looks a nice one Keith, does it have a base mark?

I have 10 pieces 8 Japanese & 2 Chinese.  The Chinese are firstly a small, very conventional vase, and secondly a modern, medium "Cinnabar" vase.  I suspect the latter is actually plastic coated but I bought it anyway to remind me what the real thing looks like.  Normally the underlying metal is copper/brass which tarnishes quite quickly.

The Japanese have two distinct types.  Type 1 - Clear coloured glaze over beautifully beaten metal underlay with minimal wire work defining the major subject only.  Type 2 - Pastel opaque background with minimal wire work defining the major subject only.  Normal the exposed metal parts are plated(presumably in chrome).  Several of the Japanese are marked 'Made in Japan' on the base ring.  One of the Japanese ones, that I have yet to photograph is most unusual in that it rather looks like an Aboriginal dot painting and the base has a Japanese Makers Mark.

I have attached 4 samples, the two Chinese followed by an example of each type of Japanese.
