Title: Old glass bottle covered in knotted rope
Post by: Tigerchips on January 03, 2012, 04:02:32 PM
A glass bottle decorated with knotted rope. Unusual isn't it? Shipping related perhaps?

I'd suspect so TC. There are some more here:

and instructions as to how to make your own if you feel like being creative:

Seems practical for boating so as to stop glass chinking together if the water's a bit choppy! :)

Ropework is one of those traditional boatman skills as well...  I rather like them in a boaty sort of way.

Thanks, I've been looking everywhere for something similar but couldn't find anything, must have been Googling with the wrong keywords.

It says on that page that they are new but i'm not convinced that mine is new unless they do them with old bottles.

This is the kind of bottle that was used for mine....
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-H-GILBEY-GIN-FROSTED-AND-CLEAR-BOTTLE-/230710668777?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35b76d6de9#ht_799wt_952

It may not be identical to my bottle but it has the script writing of W&A Gilbey ltd. I don't think Gilbey do script writing like that anymore.

I see they have one in this next link.... http://www.dennisraleighantiques.com/seriousale2.html It looks a lot older than mine but it's from my area in Newcastle, they must have been quite popular around my area maybe. I got it from Blyth, which isn't far from Newcastle, Blyth had a very large shipping port at one point.

I know this discussion is a few years old now but I only just noticed it. I've noticed bottles with the covering (not sure what to call it) in a painting of Hogarth's Midnight Modern Conversation, of which there are various versions of. Here's one that shows them bottom left and top right.

I think it was in a book about Hogarth by Lars Tharp or maybe it was about ceramics and Hogarth was mentioned. I'll see if I still have it.

Thanks. I don't think there's a particular name for it other than Sailor's Ropework.
