Title: Handsome Jug
Post by: cookiebella on January 18, 2012, 05:25:14 PM
I have a rather nice  handsome jug and the sig on the base looks  like my Doctor's signature  ; :24:  Spent hours going through my book and can't find anything that looks remotely like it. I can't even tell the right way up  :24: :24: Any ideas anyone please?  thanks

The "signature" (scribble ;D) on the left is shown in my copy of British Studio Potters' Marks (Yates-Owen & Fournier) p.40.  "Dated 1980-83 thrown by David Small decorated by Susan."  i.e. Susan Bennett.  "Thrown decorative stoneware, functional pieces including candleholders & planters. Commemorative plates, mugs, trophies, figures, etc."    Not sure what the other squiggle is though...

It's the way you stand :24:
Found it purely by luck, but I often look for the shape as opposed to the "initials".
It's really difficult to know which way up these things should be read???
