Title: redware tobacco jar

I don't know if anyone else has seen this on ebay. It's on now but I'm sure it was in the past year and didn't sell. I know nothing about this find it a fascinating item. Any thoughts? thanks

What a very curious item, Julie! I had a quick search for 'Ethiopian Serenaders' and found a Wikipedia entry amongst other mentions of them, listing them thus:  "The Ethiopian Serenaders was a blackface minstrel troupe from the 1840s."  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethiopian_Serenaders

What I am puzzled by is why they should be depicted on the pot as cats rather than people?  ???

Reading that wiki entry (thanks for that, I didn't get that far before) two things occur to me about portraying them as cats. 1. the issue of the faces being black or white is avoided and 2. cats are cool (hepcats) on the Ethiopian Serenaders side. I don't understand now why the "musical party" - more sedate is still portrayed as cats (2 white ones and another w/a white face - maybe I'm reading too much into this!)

I have since managed to find 2 of these at reasonable prices. The 2 are slightly different sizes and colours although the designs appear exactly the same. One has what the seller described as a weight but I have seen described as a tamper. I thought they were as large as the opening but this one is small. My pics are a bit dark. Will add more.

These have made me notice tobacco jars more. I think they are undervalued items for their high quality (not the original item here though which I think is quite expensive, I paid a lot less for these). I have bought some to use as bulb pots as they are as cheap if not cheaper than some flower pots. I will post separately.

Maybe it's by one of the Barnstaple potteries in Devon? Terracotta pottery is another name for it i think.

You mean terracotta pottery rather than redware? I never used that term before, just how the item was described on ebay.

It's just another name for it in case you need to search for it on Google, eBay, etc.
