Title: black basalt imitation?
Post by: ju1i3 on January 22, 2017, 07:00:58 AM
I bought this piece which is missing its lid as it reminded me of Wedgwood black basalt bulb pots but on examination I don't think it is that, just a lidded container? 9.5 cm tall, 13 cm wide, 8 cm deep, unmarked. I thought of these items as heavy but this is quite light. The relief on one side is a woman riding a shell pulled by dolphins or some sea creature. The other side I'm not sure but some men including one holding a blunderbuss? Any idea of manufacturer or age?

thanks

I've seen mention of Fortuna (a female figure) riding a shell pulled by stylised dolphins. It's the closest I can find so far for one of the designs.
