Title: Art Deco style cat
Post by: Tigerchips on August 06, 2007, 05:33:42 PM
 ;)

I've had this cat for a while and never seen another like it. It reminds me of Wade (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160143176053) but there are probably other firms with this kind of pattern. It has no markings at all.

Thanks, Tony.

The base is quite Sylvac but he isn't in the pattern book..

Strange and fun thing!

Sylvac crossed my mind as they do strange cats but I have the Sylvac Story and it's not in that. I don't think all the Sylvac animals are in that book though.

I has a glaze similar to some Empire ware ...but somehow I don't think it would be them...however I just love it - its gorgeous!

I love it too. Not sure what the hole is for, maybe a napkin holder or something.

It's not in the Charlton Standard Catalogue Of Wade Collectables so it's probably not one of theirs.

Did you ever find out what this was?

I think I have seen something like this somewhere else, but I can not remember where....see if I can remember where.  But my memory fails me (sometimes)  :old:  :24:

Shorter?

Colour and drip glaze seems to match. What do you think?

It's certainly a good possibility, the glaze is spot on

I'd agree - I've always thought this was a really classy piece, superior to most Wade or Sylvac.

The glaze is similar to this one. :x-fingers:

That one was made by Royal Staffordshire Pottery and designed by Clarice Cliff. She was known for making napkin holders. I believe she designed things for Shorter & Sons though I'm not 100% sure on that.

The Shorter fish set is reputed to be designed by her.

She was married to Mr. Shorter wasn't she? Maybe she designed things for him over breakfast.

There's a shorter fish cruet on ebay which made 60 odd quid. I think she started working for Lingard Webster when she was only 13.

I've posted on a Clarice Cliff forum, just waiting for a reply...

TC I asked the eBay seller if the piece listed was marked and it is! :) Reply was "it is marked Shorter & Sons, Stoke-on-Trent, Made in Great Britain."

Clarice Cliff was Colley Shorter's 2nd wife - they were married soon after the death of his 1st wife (a long-term invalid). Clarice worked for Shorter before and after they were married. I added a link telling their story to LINKS but for quickness it's here: http://www.aw-antiques-collectibles.co.uk/collecting-clarice-cliff-pottery.php

Thanks for asking Anne.  :)

She also had a sister, Dolly Cliff who painted pottery. But Dolly's work seems to be more floral than Art Deco.

I've actually managed to find another one the same shape... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Art-Deco-Stylised-Pottery-Cat-/152540153283?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=SuLsDBL2Nm92vYBQNRAyxN8p1us%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

It has a light brown glaze with initial marks scratched into the base, it's not a mark i recognise though.

Hmmm I can't make the marks out properly but it could be AV?

Maybe it's by a smaller studio, i wouldn't expect to see scratch marks on things such as Wade or Shorter etc, not that i can remember anyway. It's also possible it's been scratched by a previous owner, so that it doesn't get stolen.

Shame i can't contact the buyer. I see ebay have hidden the bidders names too, "to keep ebay a safe place for sellers".

Possibly,  one might turn up with a label one day though, then we'll know for sure. They are fun though!

This Wade Heath jug here has initials on it... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Art-Deco-Porcelain-Vase-Flaxman-Ware-Wade-Heath-Pottery-/192239093837?hash=item2cc257c84d:g:RrcAAOSwFGNWSe9g

It's not in my Wade book though.
