Here is a pot I've been unable to identify for a while (about 3 years).
At first I thought the pattern was a tree but now i'm sure its 3 fish.
The mark looks like LeD ????
Any ideas welcome.
Thanks
David

" L E O " ??? ??? Maybe do the flour/talc powder trick in it ??
:rse:
-
When i first saw this, i thought it was very Leach-ish?? it could be Lowerdown pottery? but i am not sure, could you do the talc, or pencil rubbing trick on this too please??
-
Thanks Sue and antiquerose123.
I've had another go with graphite and talc...IT WORKS!
I'm fairly sure it is still LeD but i suppose it could be L & D Or LcD .
Sue, I had thought about the Lowerdown possibility as it has some Leach similarities. However, I've got some Lowerdown with a very different marks and haven't seen anything like it on the Studio Pottery site.
Maybe someone will be able to have more ideas with the new picture.

Thanks again,

Well it certainly look's like Led, but dont forget that the Leach family have taught many potters over the years, maybe a student?

This one had me stumped for years as well....then I gave up and listed mine on ebay with a pretty speculative "Leach??" in the title....no body thought it was but it did sell for a few pounds, I have seen this mark listed as one of Louise Darby's but dont know if thats any more likey? They're nicely potted whoever made them and some are even more David Leach-like than yours is, but I'm certain it is'nt....sorry I cant be more help at the moment, I'll keep looking...

Cheers Martyn,
You'd think this would be a recognised mark, as most of it is pretty decent stuff. Its not in any of my books though. I'm not so keen on that brown ribbed lamp base it looks a very 70's dull brown.
We'll have to buy it up and promote it! It worked with Troika on the back of one collector's exhibition!

Thanks Pip,
My hunch is that it is someone who has changed their mark at some point. It seems to be a potter who you'd expect to have been recognised by the specialist books.

here's the one I had.....

Now that piece i like!...
Porcelain though, but with a very stoneware looking glaze.

That's stoneware, too coarse for porcelain
-
Possibly,I'll be honest i looked at the photo label and saw the colour of the body an assumed. Does look an odd colour for stoneware though!

100% porcelain, just hand thrown giving it a slightly textured look....
It is a nice piece (no longer ours) and I'm sure the mark must be known by someone out there...if we keep bumping the thread long enough......

That surprises me :-[

Christine,
without handling in the flesh and from my slighty fuzzy pics it's always going to be very difficult to tell for sure and as David said it has a stoneware style glaze. Studio potters also mess around, firing white porcelain clays at low temperatures and fine stoneware at high temps so distinctions can get very blurred.....and 'at the end of the day' meaningless!...it's all pottery... Absolutely no need for an embarassed smiley at all...
