Title: French - but what use does it have?

I have no idea of the purpose of this "container".........I can only think that it may have been for sugar lumps?  It is 17.5 cms tall to top of lid, approx 20cms across from handle edges.  The opening at the top is 3.5cms x 7 cms. I would say it is Art Deco "ish"  Any help please most appreciated. Emmi

It's slightly blurry but looks like  "St.Amandindise  - St.Amand "  Emmi
