I am guilty of giving folk a little bull now and then.

Only about 20 to 30 pieces Pip,I bought a very unusual one last week,i'll put a pic of it and some other stuff next week.
Eric really was a character, known in Newlyn for throwing wild parties as much as for his pottery.

Well done with the Leaper cat TC. ?260 must be a record. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=280191653270
Will you sell this for me? I bought it the same day.

I don't think the final sale price had anything to do with me Dan, I'm just a amateur seller at 46 sales (no other ID's). I don't think the 10" cat had ever been seen before at that height, which made it quite rare.

Hello there dan and TC
I have really enjoyed the pictures and chat however although my knowledge is very limited I myself got a little confused there for a minute until you explained dan.

(Mod: Photo's now corrected or deleted)

I have off work for a while what with operations etc and have got interested in pottery. I came across Leaper and was bowled over particularly by the glazes. Love the picture of the three peacock plates dan and the reds on those figures were brilliant.
Its a pity dan your Leaper collection is all boxed up as I would really like to get an idea of the full range of leapers.
Any chance on day that they will see the light of day?
Morse

Many thanks again.
Those sites have been my primary source so far (the Carn site and the Studio Pottery) as i was initially attracted to troika being an exiled cousin jack and feeling somewhat close to the 'earth' so to speak.
I also looked at Carn and Celtic when i started to look at cornish pottery. However Troika is too expensive for me and the others, particularly the Carn, seemed a bit over hyped to me for what it really is (my wife bought me the Carn book with which i was disappointed with -almost a sales promotion book).
However something in the Leaper has really got to me - i want to possess it (is that how this potter lark gets to you!!) and find out about him and his output.
I would really be intrigued when you get your collection out as i would like to get hold of any copies of the photos and if your going to sell any I would recommend you do it on ebay otherwise i might follow you around the markets and have less competition!!!!
By the way when is all the Leaper going to come out of cupboards and lofts as a lot must have been produced!!!!

PS TC does that red owl scare the cats!!!!

Leaper and Celtic are my two favorite Cornish potteries, the Celtic pottery had a handful of full time staff so the output was reasonably high, especially later on with designs like Phoenix which sell for very little since everyone raked their Phoenix plate out of the attic and ebayed it!
Eric on the other hand had no staff, worked when he wanted and produced much less pottery so the market can never be swamped by Leaper pots. ;D

I was too busy dealing with my stupid customers to bid on this piece, work just gets in the way of pottery collecting! I will have to choose between Newark and Swinderby fairs next month IT'S SO UNFAIR! :crying1:

What do you think of this posted on ebay??? Glaze looks a bit like that you see on the lava pottery.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270207026098

By the way do you both have stalls at fairs? Does the collecting bug result in collecting so much that you have to go out and recycle some???

Although it will be a bit of an effort for me I am thinking of trying to get to the Newark fair on the friday just to taste the experience. Is there any strategy at such a large event or are the pottery stalls clustered together? Any advice to the novice appreciated.

Dan in the comments on Leaper it says in Newlyn he was 'using four kilns and had a workforce of six' - is this not correct of is that small beer for a pottery?

Sorry about all the questions!!

Does anyone know whether Eric Leaper signed anything with his surname in lower case and underlined?
Everything I have seen is signed in capitals without necessarily including newlyn.
Is this another Leaper?

Always Angular capitals in my experience,Simon Leaper may have signed in lower case but I only have a few pieces of his pottery.

I bought this one today,it is very unusual in both the fact that it was slip molded and also the colourway.

So how do you tell if it's Leaper if it's not marked, is it the Matte black glaze?
Title: Re: Eric Leaper
Post by: dantheman on February 10, 2008, 12:07:05 PM
How do you spot an unmarked Leaper? Well most people don't.
In the main, people think Leaper pieces have either the Orange drippy glaze or the ones pictured earlier on the group of three trays so all the other colours are not recognised.
Eric gererally used a brown treacle glaze as his base colour and his potting was poor as he was essentially a colourist but after that it's all down to experience and research.

It isn't marked Sue,in fact I have been researching today and am beginning to wonder if it realy is a Leaper piece,I will have to consult with an expert friend of mine.

Is there a catalogue you refer to check what Leaper produced & if so can you buy it. Ive bought some leaper in the past that was marked but nearly got caught out today buying a piece that I would have sworn was leaper but was actually made in Malorca.

Hello Morse,

So how does your Leaper  heart go these days?   Three years later are you still possessed?  I am Newlyn (get it? new/ Newlyn?  sorry. tee hee) possessed by Mr. Leaper.. and in the States, so a bit more to get him here.
I have perhaps gone beyond what one "should" bid on a Leaper on ebay?? and have yet to hold and see one in the flesh, but I know I will!    some day, because I too am possessed!
