I contacted them, and got this reply:
Patrick Dowie is from Saskatoon. I'm not entirely sure how long he has been painting. According to his bio he retired from a 25 year career teaching Art in 2002. Given that, I would say we can safely assume at least 28 years.
Patrick has shown in Calgary and Saskatoon and has work in collections across Canada. His work concerns themes from snowy Saskatchewan, to farming, to desert landscape and sailing. Recently Patrick rented paintings to the set of Rabbit Falls, a television............(etc).............Thank you for your interest.
That is more than I knew before...Thanks :kissy:

RECEIVED ANOTHER e-MAIL RESPONSE FROM THAT GALLERY...AND HE SAID THIS, QUOTE:
"You did get a deal on the Dowie peice. His current work is selling at about $ 600 - $ 800.00. Hope this helps. Devon."
:o :o :o I bought this for $4 at a garage sale :o :o :o
They had wanted $5 for it, but I haggled down a dollar...lol. OMG...I can NOT believe that. I e-mailed him back to ask (just out of curiousity now) what is the price of the picture he has for sale there in his gallery of Dowie....OMG....I can not believe that.
SUE C -- I owe you a drink, or two for finding that site... ;) :kissy: :kissy: :kissy: You (and the gallery) helped make my surgery pain a little less tonite !!
-
Thats ok Rose, if the gallery is nearby why dont you take it in to be authenticated? then if you sell it you will have the paperwork to go with it :)
-
I am thinking of that....Devon send me another name of a gallery (right here) where they have sold his work, so I will contact them....and I guess this artist (use to) live right here...so I am going to pick up the phone book (with my good arm) and see if he still lives here....then I will give him a call...see if he will put anything in writing.
So I live in the same city where this guy is from....hopefully that makes it easier...and he has not retired somewhere else. Stay posted.

update:
I just spoke with the artist personally, and he wanted to know which one I had...just sent him an E-mail 2 seconds ago...
Lives right here in the city...and listed in the phone book....he said to I got a real GOOD DEAL.
Will keep you up-dated, as he took my number down and will either phone me back...or E-mail me :cheerleader: :cheerleader:

How exciting Rose !!

Great news Rose, am thrilled for you. :cheerleader:

Yes...I spoke with him last night, and he gave me their E-mail address, as he wanted to see which one it was....after I E-mailed him we talked on the phone again.
He said he did this one in 1978, and even has in his records whom he had orginnially sold it to (J. Beattie). He said I got a really good deal, as for his smaller pictures start at $400, and this is a larger pic (approx 24 in Wide by 33 inches long). He is a retired *ART* teacher, but still paints. His pictures hang in Provincial Government offices, and Federal Government offices. Many lawyers offices all across Canada, and the USA have his pictures. He has a display that has been a travelling around, since he was a teacher of ART. He has art work commissioned all over the world. All his pieces are originial, one of a kind.
He does rural farming pixs, landscapes, and has now starting doing fishing boats, and ocean pictures which are being sold in Galleries on the California coast.
He was a little shock where I had bought it, and the price I had paid. He even offered that if I ever wanted to sell it, that he would buy it back....and he joked that an artist never pays the full price for his OWN WORK back...lol.
When at his summer/cabin/home in (Duck Lake, Saskatchewan)...he puts on a some shows July, and August. I told him that we usually get up that way in the summer to the lake, and he Welcomed me to stop by his Gallery there. Pat Dowie said his Gallery is not far from GLEN SCRIMSHAW GALLERY at Duck Lake. I told him that we have stopped by that *other Gallery* to look around when we have been on our way to the lake.
His Other Artist Friend: http://www.glenscrimshaw.com/other_pages/glen_story.html
Pat Dowie said he has been thinking of putting up his own web page, and said it could be in the near future, now that he has more time being retired.
He was surprised where I found it, but then said pictures do change hands, and things like this happen as this was a picture he did in 1978....so over time, people pass on, pictures change hands....then *somebody* doesn't like it...and gets rid of it.....
He said he will be doing a show in the future here, and said he would *sent me an invitition* to it. I had mentioned the site (as Sue had posted here) where I finally found info on him.
As we talked, the funny part of the whole conversation was he grew up in an area about 30 miles away from where I was raised too. He knows the area where I an from. He said he started painting when he was about 12 years old, and his Dad used to give his paintings away to friends, neighbours, business friends. So he said that out towards Rosetown area, there are probaby a lot of his childhood painting out there.....and who knows what could happen to them -- and told me keep an eye out more ANY more good paintings at garage sales -- as somewhere down the road-- they sometimes end up there. He told me that he has heard of this happening to other painters, but I was his first. We laughed, and I told him I have watched the Antique Roadshow too much....
I asked him if he would sent me a letter to authenticate the painting...and he said that he also has a biography thing he hands out at shows. He did say he would sent me one, and a letter with his signature on it.....so time will tell IF he follows through on what he said
So that is all I know, and said the size of the picture I have would sell between $600 - $800 in the Gallery, and if not more....and said that "I did real good..."
He had to go, as he was painting at the time...and his brushes would dry out.
So that is what I have now found out. :) ;) :cheerleader:

Rose , that is so fantastic. It makes all this collecting worthwhile, and great for him to have been so pleased about it. Great story.
What will you do? I suppose you have to think about it.

Keep it...I guess that is part of why I like antiques, pottery,
glass etc.....and the hunting. A simple (unknown) small investment that may pay off....and the mystery.
I am going to start to do a simple inventory here of the things where the riddle has been solved, and what I paid for it, whom made it, and (possible price reference to links etc) to what it is worth.
It is for my son....and goes back to how my *Mother's Estate was handled*. I want him to be able to know what the stuff is here......and to me, it is handling my own affairs -- in a proper manner.
I guess when my Mom died, and how the executor handled things -- it was so undignified. These treasures, no matter what they are should be *properly documented*. If I can find something for $4, and is worth hundreds, then it is sort of an investment too....as it will be documented in insurance, and in my WILL (items listed) so that the true value is known.
As for an investment (that I never knew I had - until now)....where else can you put out $4, and then (luckily) in a matter of six months make that $4 into hundreds of dollars....no bank gives you a return like that. Example: On another forum (no names mentioned) I purchased that vase for $5.....now have found/confirmed value of around $1450 for that alone. Then with this picture -- a $4 purchase, and could be worth like $600 or $800 dollars.
I spent only a total of $ 9 dollars on these two items....a possible profit could be $2050 - $ 2250. Yes, i understand the market, needing the right buyer, and prices change for items (supply and demand) but on the same hand, I am money ahead......my simple way of investing for a single mom ( I hope).
.....and if I ever get broke.....I guess I could sell it.... :24: :24: I have one buyer already....lol

I couldn't agree more Rose, keep doing what you do!
