I thought I'd post a success here to cheer you all up

Japanese Awaji ware from 'Early Showa' period
(late 1920's - 1930's) 
Very finely crackled all over
Awaji Island (Jp. 淡路島 Awajishima) Japan, is in the Eastern part of the Seto Inland Sea between the islands of Honshu and Shikoku

It took me many hours over several sessions to ID this pot which I'd had for about 20 years, from the gotheborg site but I learned quite a bit in the process.

Well done, Pete!  :clap:  I really must sit down with some of my oriental stuff and try to find the marks!  Trouble is, after a little while they make my eyes go squiffy!  :czy:

p.s. when I type in to AltaVista *Made in China*, then translated it, I got this  中国制造.....so the first symbol is a box with a line through it....and that is similar to the mark on mine under this forum post "Chinese or Japenes" also.  So I assume we are getting somewhere.....very s-l-o-w-l-y.... :-\
