My better half picked this up today, inscribed 'Where hearts are God will be' does anyone think this might be old and could they be amethysts ? lots of wear but no hall marks, ;D

The certainly look like amethysts to me.

You can get jewellery tested to see if it's a precious metal or not, Keith. Either get a kit and do it yourself (NB dangerous chemicals are involved so take care if you go down this route), or (safer option) pop into a friendly local jeweller and ask them to take a look. They can also confirm if the stones are amethysts.
There's an interesting summary of poesy / posy rings here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~fordingtondorset/Files/Glossaryposyrings.html (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~fordingtondorset/Files/Glossaryposyrings.html)

Also, I found an interesting report of a posy ring find here:

Thanks Anne, not sure it's that old but I'll pop in the local jewellers and see what they say, ;D ;D
