Impressed in the grass on the rear of base is 'Austria 1620' this has been in the family since at least the late 1950s and was either brought with my mum when she came to the UK in 1948 or not longer after as a gift by visiting relatives, she always said it was German.
Anne found examples that once appeared on eBay as rare Staffordshire, but no reason to assume that is correct.... One of those seemed a little larger and the birds body was not opened as a receptacle.
Only event in Austria for 1620 was Ferdinand II becoming King of Bohemia.
