Studio Pottery / Re: Large salt pig
« Last post by Anne on February 09, 2020, 11:44:54 PM »
Thanks Cat, I've seen others of these around and they are alleged to date from 1980's-ish, but none of them are marked, labelled or back-stamped. A local dealer who has one in her stock suggested they might be Wetheriggs Pottery (in Cumbria - but now closed down), another pottery collector suggested it might be Grayshott Pottery, whilst a third suggested they might be early John Kershaw.  So, we are all as puzzled as each other on these Cat!

Hmmm..... not much to go on Anne, but I'm game....

From the pictures, it looks modern, moulded and maybe fairly mass-produced, rather than a thrown, studio piece.

I did find another one here, also unattributed.

Have you considered Shelf Studio Halifax?  It's a long shot though.

Jewellery / Information sought on lead brooch with Egyptian design
« Last post by catshome on February 08, 2020, 08:45:27 PM »
This old brooch measures 6.5cm x 4.2cm.  It appears to be made of lead, and has a steel pin with brass C-clasp.  The hinge has caused a small tear in the metal on the front of the brooch.  The design appears to be an Egyptian couple.

I would be interested in any information, as this is a piece from Mum's jewellery box and she cannot tell me anything about it herself.

Thank you for looking.

News / Bentham Pottery Leaky Brexit Mug
« Last post by Anne on February 06, 2020, 03:03:45 AM »
We don't normally do politics on this board, but for this item I'll make an exception!  It's a really interesting story from last year of a pottery a few miles from us, where the potter (Lee Cartledge) was getting a bit fed up with Brexit, so decided to make a statement mug.  The feature of the mug was that it wouldn't hold water!  It was posted onto social media, and then went viral, the mainstream media picked it up, and this small local pottery in North Yorkshire suddenly found itself on the television news and besieged by journalists from around Europe.  Even the V&A were in touch about them!

You can read the full story here on their own website: https://www.benthampottery.com/theleakybrexitmugwithholes/

Hi Cat, it's not a mark I recognise, but it'd be worth having a look at this new website and run a search for a match there. http://bispm.co.uk/search.php

What's my Pottery? / Stoneware lampbase with impressed A
« Last post by catshome on February 02, 2020, 07:24:55 PM »
Away from home at the moment so no measurements available, but this is a heavy, fairly large - 11"ish thrown lamp base, with a golden tree/plant design.  Impressed A, which looks similar to the capital A written using the font "Palace Script MT".  No hole drilled in the bottom, so it would have had a fitting pushed into the top.  No luck with Godden, or my second edition copy of Yates/Fournier.

Thank you for looking

What's my Pottery? / Semi-matt finish vase, marked Sena/Sema/Sewa/Senia?
« Last post by catshome on February 02, 2020, 07:08:03 PM »
First post to this board and very impressed with the emoji selection!

The finish on this vase is similar to that of some Poole pottery pieces.  At first look, it shouldn't be as much of a challenge as it has been.  I have found pieces described as Sena, Sema, Sewa and Senia, but no further information about any of them.  The "horn" symbol also appears fairly distinctive, but hasn't helped.

This ebay listing has an incised Sena, and the seller refers to a possible attribution to "M.Sena", but I have been unable to find out about M.Sena.

The attribution on this one is "I.Senia" but, again, I have no information about the maker.  It does have the same shape as my piece.

Any ideas much appreciated.

Thanks
Cat
