Carlton Ware or copy?
« on: November 05, 2008, 08:48:24 PM »
What does anyone think about my blue flanged mug?  It looks like Carlton Ware's flanged pieces from their Wellington range (c.1971), but the colour doesn't match the 'sky blue' or 'dark blue with floral pattern' that they did - http://www.retroselect.com/Carlton%20Ware/wellington%20more.htm.

I've had some C.W. Wellington pieces before (which my youngest nabbed), and they all had white glaze interiors unlike my mug which is all the same colour (matt).  Also, no fine crazing under the glaze which I'd expect to find if it was an original.

So, is it a copy?  ??? :hlp: :)

Found it!  8:)  Here's the base... I can fit my finger in to touch the base of the mug.

I'm not familiar with the Wellington pattern but found some examples in other colours here: http://www.retroselect.com/Carlton%20Ware/Carlton%20Ware%202.htm - sadly they don't seem to be highly regarded at the moment, but they're a great shape for sure.
Cheers!

Thanks Anne :)  That's where I got my orig. info from. Its a great website.  Unlike my mug, they all have a high gloss glaze.    They are a fab shape I agree, but they are to my mind more decorative than anything else.  I've had a couple of the tall coffee pots in the past, and it was so easy to knock them over, so was glad to pass them on.  I prefer something with a big squat bum that's safe, and hard to knock over (a bit like my OH ;D)

Yeah I know what you mean Anne - my son hate tall narrow things as he tends to send 'em crashing over too.  :-\ He likes those conical-based wine glasses as they're almost impossible to knock over.  :cheerleader:

(BTW I'm in the same group as your OH!!!  :24:)
Cheers!
