Walking Ware
« on: February 20, 2010, 12:38:08 PM »
I thought we had something about these already but can only find brief mentions in 2 other posts, so it's time we had more!

Everyone, me included, seems to think that Walking Ware was only made by Carlton but that's not the case. From the Roger Michell website, I learned more...

Walking Ware was designed by Roger Michell Lustre Pottery in 1973 from an idea by Danka Napiorkowska. It was made in the studio and later manufactured by Carltonware until the factory closed down in 1986.

Since the closure of Carltonware, Roger has created two new teasets which are hand-made and hand-decorated at his studio, the Lustre Pottery. The new sets are the French Set (design date 2006) and a larger set (design date 2007). The site also says...

These sets are made in small, limited editions and these will mark the last of Lustre Pottery Walking Ware designs.

For anyone interested in Walking Ware, there is a book: Walking Ware, A Collector's Guide, by Julia Michell, and there's a talking/visual guide, by Roger Michell, to the book here: http://walkingware.co.uk/flashfiles/Walking%20Ware%20Book%20sample.html/ along with a DVD of interviews with the designers etc. Fascinating stuff and essential for anyone collecting Walking Ware.

Cheers!
