Info about Bretby 1422E planter please
« on: June 29, 2012, 08:14:08 PM »
8" diameter with green and red drip-glaze.

Can anyone tell me anything about it? I'd also like to know the meaning of the 1422E? There is a 1422K on Millers site but there is no date info.

I know Bretby started in 1883 until 1933 when there was a change in ownership

Godden's British Pottery & Porcelain Marks makes no mention of the letters after the number, so this is conjecture on my part... as there are two items of the same shape with a different letter, I would suspect that the letter relates either to the size - yours is 8", the Miller's site one is 9"; or it relates to the decoration as they are clearly different.

Alternatively, it may be that what the letter relates to was unique to each pattern no. as there is another vase with an E here http://www.decorative-antiques.co.uk/displayItem.asp?IID=9419&key=Bretby%20Art%20Pottery%20Art%20Nouveau%20Jardiniere%201069E which has a different shape, size and design! Confusing isn't it?  :crying1:

The fact that yours has Made in England, rather than just England, dates it to after 1900. There's a bit about the Bretby Pottery here: http://www.decorative-antiques.co.uk/histories/bretby.htm

I'm not sure this is much help or if I've just muddied the waters even more! There is a book on Bretby, which I don't have, which might enlighten you: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0954061306/thepotterystudio if you can track down a copy somewhere. Amazon are out of stock but yuou might find one on Abebooks or Biblio instead.  :x-fingers:

Cheers!

Thanks for your help. Very confusing as I have read elsewhere that Bretby was 1883 - 1933 but in your link it states 1883 - 1920.

Thanks. I'm happy enough with a 'most likely 1910', Georgian
