Any ideas about this figure with crown over L stamp?
« on: November 08, 2007, 09:15:32 AM »
Hi guys!

Got this figure in an auction lot yesterday, and wonder if anyone recognises the mark? The figure is beautifully detailed and stands about 6.5"/16cm tall. From the style of her 'crown' and the mark, I'd guess she's continental and I'm wondering if she's a character from a story?

Have exhausted all my reference sources, so it's over to you...

Many thanks in anticipation, John.

PS the mark has the number 17/176 scratched through it.

Hi Christine ~ thanks for that. It was my first thought when I saw her, but I'm not sure as a) she's holding a bird and b) she's not white!

Hmm? when i first saw this i thought Italian, but the L mark with crown look's A BIT! like Vincennes porcelain ( French ) another factory useing the crown and L mark was Ludwigsburg, but the crown on yours look's like the capodimonte mark for Napels.

There are lots of Italian tourist pieces ie: figurines, with the crown mark on the base but with different letters, yours is far too good for that.

Isnt there someone here who joined recently, an experct on Italian ceramics.

Well, i'm going for Italian.........??????or maybe French...........or maybe.........oh carp!

Thanks for your thoughts Sue. I thought the crown looked like the CdM one too, and the figure is certainly very good quality, better than 'tourist' quality, that's for sure! Will keep digging and hope the Italian expert sees this! It's so frustrating!!  ???

Hi Sue,
Attached is a piccie of the base. Have just noticed that the bit where the crown and L are is very highly glazed ~ looks almost like a plastic label over the top of it!
Have also put other views and a close up of the lady and the bird ~ as you'll notice, the bird unfortunately has a bit of damage to it  :(

PS I forgot to say earlier, but I'm not sure how old she is either!

Thanks for your efforts guys!

Don't suppose it's any help, but it came with this spill vase (at least, I think that's what it is!) which I've ID'd as Elbogen from Austria/Boehmia/Czech Republic depending on where you look!

Have found a reference in an auction catalogue to a "Dresden lace style figure group, on raised oval base, 18th c. style lovers with flowering tree, hand painted detail, gilt highlights. Marked: (Crown over L) mark." but it doesn't show the mark! Picture of the figure is at http://www.dargate.com/246_auction/246_images/2836.jpg
Isn't the normal Dresden crown a bit different from this one, which looks more like a CdM crown to my inexpert eye?

Thanks for the info re the falcon, Kev. Guess that ties up nicely with her regal stature & dress!
