Hi, I have this. A leaf dish, with a twisted handle. I first thought it amatuerish, but then I wondered how they would get the leaf lines -- then I looked at the twisted handle, and thought that was probably done better than an amateur...

So now my question is -- does anyone know (maybe) E.S.J stands for a certain person? At least we are certain of the year.....and is this a amateur piece/studio piece.

I guess if anyone can find something on ESJ, then maybe it is not childish....after all, look at (famous) *GEORGE ORR* pottery designs -- they look like a two year old did them.....AND THEY DEMAND $$ PRICES.

Majolica perhaps? Here's mine, that I think might be the same maker. What's the back like.

Huuummmm, now could that be a piece of greenware someone "painted n' fired" in a pottery class?

I remember years ago my wife talked me into joining such a "class" with her and I selected a beer stein

....... which I painted all up nice and purty, put my initials on the bottom, put the glaze on it and the Instructor "fired it" for me.

I thought that too, but then when I looked at the handle -- it just looks better made than an amateur. Then I thought maybe green ware, but then it seems (to me) have that edge of no as perfect as green ware would be.

That is why I am not sure...part of it (bottom colors) look amateur, but then the handle looks much better made....and the leaf impressions do not look amateur...

So I do not know what it is....I just thought it anyone found something for ESJ, and then some examples with that on it -- it might point us somewhere...

Or no-where. $:-\$

Essentially, any pottery made with a soft-paste clay, which is better for detail than hard-paste, and finished with high fired tin-glaze is classed as majolica.

What I wouldn't give for a piece of Bernard Palissy majolica, especially one of the pieces with lizards and creepy-crawlies all over it.

It's hard to tell without being able to hold the piece, but I certainly wouldn't rush to call it trash. Some of my most cherished pieces would grace most other peoples bins, but IMHO if you like it, you like it, and the true value of the piece is in the pleasure it gives, not the name attached to it!

Thanks - just wanted to know IF anything I have is majolica -- would be nicer....as I like them, but it would just be nicer to have the name attached to it..

You know what I mean, as that is why we are always looking for proof of an item we post..

It's always good to identify your pieces and it makes it easier to find more by the same maker if you really like their work (and adds to the resale value if it's a 'good' name!).

very Nice Carolyn there.

No marks on it though? Very bright, strong colors there. the brown is really nice and dark.

I have no clue on that as to what letters (if any) that is on your item - Do you know Carolyn? Do you know any history on it? Not sure if that is a *Y* and a *P* or what?
