Author Topic: Boy and Girl figures made in london - maker A.F. Co unknown material (Read 9877 times)

Can anyone help me identify these 2 figures
boy and girl, both marked with made in london, on the back of the boy is the letters a.f. co this is in a circle
what are these made of you ask, well good question, it is hard but not breakable, proberly from a mould, i thought maybe a resin but i dont know, they have been painted, there is some of the paint missing and the colouring is almost marble looking
they are dressed in what looks like war times era

These may be nothing of interest but something caught my eye with them, now I am interested in any info, especially what the marks stand for.
I have exhausted my searcing mainly becasue i do not know what they are made of.
help!!!

Could you do us some larger pics of the base please? Anything up to around 600x800 pixels in size should fit on the board if saved for the web (i.e.optimised). If you can't get them to a small enough filesize by keeping them bigger images, drop them to me in an email and I'll sort them and add them in for you.

yes, if you could supply a larger photo that would be great. As Anne said, if you have any problems, just give her a shout (or just e-mail) the larger pics to her.

Once a larger pixs is on here, then it will help us to try to figure it out...

Are they a Dutch Girl, and Boy?? Being plain, not sure a wild, wild, wild guess (aardewerkfabriek) or wrong??

hey that is interesting, i tried searching using the info I had, but if it is typed just that little bit differently it is amazing what can be found, i was looking for a.f.co and was not getting anything, but i dont think i checked ebay worldwide, so that is a start. now about the dutch connection, not so sure, the dress the figures are wearing does look like war time cloths, but what cloths did the dutch childern wear?

I will attempt to do the photo again for a closer view on the stamp.

I have tried another photo, could not get to the correct pixels requested, if this is not good I have asked anne to let me know how to attach a pic to her email,

also this mark is not on the base it is on the back towards the bottom.

It's interesting that it says Made in London, rather than Made in England which would be more usual... now let's see what we can find out for you.

Thats great, I do not know what else i can do in the searching dept, i did try the change of wording that was suggested but i still cane up against a brick wall, :bh:but as you noted the made in london is interesting, I may be sitting on a fortune, ha ha no chance, but i live in hope

They look to be painted with gloss paint!?

yes they are painted which is even odder as they almost look like they have been hand made.

the material is medium weight, they look as if you dropped them they would not smash, they are solid, but i would not want to try, if you flick your nails on them they make dull ching if that is a word, like when you flick a cheap piece of glass, it is like they have been made from a mould.

I must agree I did think of resin as well, that could be another avenue to explore, i dont know i do know how to find the difficult ones, these have me intrigued.

Stupid question maybe -- they are not Chalk Ware are they ?? Are any edges chipping away, and can you scratch into it at the chip?

Sorry if a stupid question...but maybe chalk ware, painted over -- if such a thing ??

no not chalk, they are solid as if a type of resin, I have some bits to take to auction sometime, i think i will take these just to find out what they are, thats if they know, if i do find out i will have to let everyone know who as tried to help me.

An easy way to tell if it's resin; heat a needle or pin until it's glowing then try and push it into an inconspicuous part of the figure (preferably into one of the scratches on the base). If the needle slips in easily, it's resin.

Oh, almost forgot, hold the needle with pliers and only heat the tip. I didn't the first time I tried this.......
