Pleasecan anyone help identify marbled clay block teapot
« on: March 19, 2009, 09:38:30 PM »
Would appreciate help identifying this marbled  blocked clay tea pot .
I have tried to photograph most of the detais and have more photos.
The finial is rotates with handling and does not show on the underside of the lid.
There is a chip on the spout but iI have not seen another pottery built like this with blocks or colored marbled patterned clays.
Thank you for looking.
Jean

No marks on the bottom I take it, Jean?
Cheers!

I would say it was a studio piece, and a coffee pot rather than a teapot, perhaps mid 20th C. Don't really have a clue though

No marks on the bottom.
Did think it might be Japanese.
There was a marbled clay tiger shown on the Antiques Road Show today and David Batty said that the factory usually made tea pots but I missed the name.
Thats the trouble with advancing years!!  :pst:
Best wishes

Ah the joys of BBc i-player. The word you want is Banko, but be warned Banko is either a place or a style not a potter, as far as I can tell

Banko is typically thin walled earthenware originally made by Tokyo potter, Banko, in the 17th century.  The style was later copied in the mid-19th century at Kuwana, on Honshu Island.  It was also done starting in the 1880's at the town of Yokkaichi.  This "tapestry" style decoration is quite desirable, as most Banko features hand painted enamel slip on a monochrome, unglazed ground.  I would suspect this piece dates to the early 20th century (1910 - 1920), perhaps imported by one of the American / New York companies like A.A. Vantine.  These typically do pretty well on ebay, +/- $50 - $100.

Thank you Hugh for that info. :*:
I Googled  Banko Ware and finally found some info but none of the pots shown I have seen  so far have had similar  Blocked marbled effect.
I like the 'tapestry' description you give.
There are splashes of brown and green glaze and a little gilt on the one or two raised flowers .
best wishes
Jean
