Small unknown vase? maybe worcester?
« on: April 18, 2009, 05:20:41 PM »
Help, had this vase for years never managed to get anywhere with the mark but very fine, Had hunch it might be worcester. Nicely decorated with birds only small around 5" tall. If anybody has any hunches please reply.

The mark looks like that for Longton Hall. Can we see the base please. How old does it seem? Whay's it made of?

Checked some google pages etc seems it does look like a longton hall mark! The vase appears to be porcelain and looks period not new...hope pictures show well the base.

Done some more researching seems a rare piece if from longton hall as it appears, The vase base has quite some fritting and some yellowing which seems the norm for there items. There appears to be a faint seam running up the sides of the vase might of been made in two halfs? The three under the crossed "L" appears to mean the range although not seen anything to apply to a three. Thanks..

...a few more companies used this blue 'W' mark...

Berlin (1751-1757)
Wurzburg (1775-1780)
Bordeaux (1781-1787)

I think the mark is either crossed Vs or a W, rather than crossed Ls.
Cheers!

That's a mould line, were ceramics made in moulds that long ago? The foot rim also appears glazed, which I'm not sure I would expect in old porcelain

Hi,

In my 1970 copy of 'A dictionary of Marks' edited by Margaret Macdonald-Taylor , page 188, I found this reference that concurs with one of Tigerchips suggestions :

   "Berlin,Wegely's Porcelain Factory,

  Hard paste Porcelain made 1752-57

in blue,or impressed sometimes with numerals arranged one above the other in two or three tiers. These perhaps indicate mould numbers"

I have added a photo of the page, I'm unsure if this is appropriate, not sure if its out of copyright after 38 years!!!

        Warmest Wishes

        John
