Gibsons teapot "25th Anniversary", marked w903
« on: May 25, 2009, 12:49:03 PM »
Hi,
I have a teapot marked on the bottom, with Gibsons, Staffordshire, England, and what looks like a mark w903.

The design incorporates the words "25th Anniversary", but I can't for the life of me figure out what anniversary it might be referring to, as it has no other markings!

Anyone have any idea?

See pics in post further down, thanks in advance.

Oops - reduced the quality a bit too much there!  I'll have another go

In the US it would be used for a 25th wedding anniversary, many items have been marked for 25th, 50th, etc.

I agree with Janice. The mark is for Gibson & Sons Ltd post 1950. The number is probably either the teapot style or the decorator's number for piece work purposes

I think the decoration is known as 'resist lustre'.

Yup, a Silver Wedding (25th) Anniversary gift in the UK too.
Cheers!

25th wedding gift, or similar... It seems so obvious now *slaps forehead*

Thanks for the responses - it would appear that the mark was used until sometime in the 1960's ( http://www.thepotteries.org/mark/g/gibson.html ), so that puts the teapot at between 40-60 years old (approximately).

My girlfriend found it in her loft when we moved house yesterday, guess we'd better wait for the next 25th Anniversary in the family and have an instant gift to give.

Actually, it's not very pretty, so we may just car boot it along with the rest of the junk that we cleared ou!

Thanks again.

It always seems obvious when you know the answer but don't let that put you off asking anyhow. If there's other stuff you need help with please do just ask.  :bny:
Cheers!
