« on: May 12, 2009, 02:16:58 PM »
I have bought this vase purely out of interest it stand at 12cm and approx 14cm at its widest and has the indentation stamp of     116
                                                                       R
i have never seen this type of base stamp before, also it is smooth yet matt to the touch and is brown glazed inside. lynn

I'd suggest that 116 is the height in millimetres, Lynn. The R will possibly lead us to the maker but I've no idea who that'd be, but someone else may know.  :x-fingers:
Cheers!

It may be German and Carstens Rheinsberg. I suspect perhaps pre-War and possibly quite desirable. I could be completely wrong however, but the R mark was used by this factory

I don't think so Lynn. Fat Lava is where the glazes are thick and drippy and look like volvanic eruptions. This isn't like that at all. Firms who made FL pottery also make non-FL.

This is known as 'Sgrafitto' work, where the pattern is scratched into the body before firing, and is possibly by either Roth Keramik or Ruscha Keramic.

Sgrafitto is where the pattern is scratched through wet glaze to show the clay underneath. That one has been patterned, then had glaze applied, then the wet glaze rubbed off to show the high points of the pattern as bare clay

Yup, my mistake! In my defence though, I haven't been well of late  :boohoo: (all together now; AAAAAH). I should have said 'incised decoration', but even then that only really applies if it were done as a seperate process to the moulding, and I think that this is a moulded decoration, so I was miles away really! Sorry  ;D

Sorry to hear you've been unwell CM, hope you're on the mend now. We've missed your input on the board.
Cheers!
