I'm assuming Scottish, but... ID = Tain pottery
« on: January 01, 2017, 07:57:04 PM »
So I received this lovely Scottish (those are thistles on a back ground of "tartan") lidded jar but for the life of me, I cannot make anything out of the makers mark on the bottom.

It is definitely surrounded by a circle. The very dark smudge, top right, might be an "r" and the big thing beside it might be a capital E. There is writing around the circle, at what might be the top and then what might be at the bottom. The writing at the bottom might end "lan?" like Scotland or England, but I really cannot tell.

Any similarity to the Rye pottery backstamp? http://potterystudio.co.uk/pots/images/0001000/p0001319b.jpg

Close enough that I think I'll check out their website for older/newer versions to see if that would help. Or if they have any others with a similar pattern. Thanks so much, Tiger!

Word of warning: the link to on the Studio Pottery Rye page to The Potteries of Rye Society - isn't!  It seems to be a dating site of some kind with a pic of a young lady who will catch her death if she doesn't wrap up more than she is!  :sk2:
Cheers!

Is it the same design as this mug, Carolyn? Tain Pottery, located in the Scottish Highlands.

Yup, that's it exactly! (LOVE the tea cozies). I'm off to Tain pottery to learn more!

It is, and I quote "wee jar with lid" in Glenaldie. Quite like it. May have to buy more for myself as it I feel it works well in serving pieces. Sister has done quite well this year. Now if I can just figure out where to put the lovely picture of Edinburgh circa 1750, all framed that she gave my husband, I'll be set!

You are very welcome, Carolyn. It was a good easy one to solve (unlike a genealogy puzzle I'm working on just now!)   :czy:
Cheers!

Genealogy problems have that reputation. Might I ask just how did you find it? Lord knows you can't read the mark for love nor money. I was thinking of putting in a search for tarten pottery, but hadn't gotten around to it yet. (And do you know where one might find a round tuit? LOL)

I did a Google image search for tartan thistle pottery and up popped the mug, Carolyn.  Google keeps changing the way its searches find things but I find using 2 or 3 keywords often does the trick.

My Mother had a round tuit that used to hang on her wall!  :)
Cheers!

Especially if you're looking for Scottish tourist ware and the like :-)

Have fun in Edinburgh, TC.
