Author Topic: INTERESTING SMALL POT - PB ? (Read 8621 times)

hello everybody
pictured is an interesting small pot. I think it is a 20thc studio type pot, probably British, it is 7 inches high, pale earthenware body unglazed on the base and glazed in a very pale green shading to lilac with a kind of ridged or combed decoration and eight panels, a seal mark which is round with a capital P and a smaller B in relief. Can anybody help with this - ?

That is certainly different. Are the sides textured somewhat too? I do not have any idea, but I am sure someone here does.

It sure is fitting to have the initials PB - as they are the same as here (Pottery Board)

It's possibly by Pierre Brayford of the Old School Pottery, Edgton, Shropshire. The mark is a bit out of focus but looks ok. If you google his name there are a few email address' for him online you could try sending him a photo.

Have you had any joy with this yet? I've got a few pieces with the same mark, including candlesticks in a similar design, as well as a large figure! Have not found any id for it, but could be local to Oxforshire as I find quite a lot of it round here

Thanks for idea, no I haven't had any luck. I don't think Pierre Brayford made it, his work seemed pretty different to me. Interesting to hear about the candlesticks with same initials.

I just wonder if Gem's vase could be by Fred Bramham (Kersey Pottery, Suffolk)

? He signs his work Fb, which looks like Pb, because the letters touch.
If you look at the home page below, there are some pieces with a similar colour glaze, and he makes 8 sided pieces which are shown in the gallery, although they are a different colour.

I dropped Fred Bramham at Kersey Pottery a note and he has very kindly replied saying that the piece is not one of theirs, nor is it by Batterham (as Martin said above.)

Fred went on to say:

The texture is from the use of a twisted wire used to cut the sides of a thickly-thrown pot. We don't recognise the mark; I assume your members have access to Robert Fournier's book on studio pottery marks. It could be in there.

So, does anyone have the book mentioned to check in please? (It's not one I'd heard of but sounds worth looking out for.)

I'm not convinced that the mark on the pot and the one on the man are the same either to be honest.
