I'd be looking towards pewter or pewter plate or Britannia metal with those marks Keith, they don't really look like silver plate marks.

Hi Keith - the Cross on it with the Hand, could be a Family Crest. There is a good book about these that was written in England quite a few years ago -- but I can not remember the name right now.
HERE
(some good reading here) --->
http://www.rarebooks.nd.edu/digital/heraldry/charges/humans.html
Or try this site...
http://www.freecoatsofarms.com/heraldryebooks.html
To me, that has something to do with it. I know a fore-arm hand holding things are called *cubit arm* that is either *cuffed* or not. Makes a difference if it is
Just the hand, or has a sleeve on it, or the forearm, or more
. Take a quick reading there on the site where I put the little Cheerleader Smiley at -- as that tells you some things....
Also means something by what they are holding in there hand too.....hope this (might) help some and if you can get some leads on that, then maybe the other stuff will fall into place...
Added:
The scripted *S* looks like some of the marks that is listed in a book called Jacksons
http://www.modernsilver.com/basichallmarks.htm
could also *ask* here on this Forum (silver etc):
