Ceramic Bust....
« on: May 14, 2010, 09:45:12 AM »
Hi there:
I went to an Estate Sale today and had bought a few things.  I had to run to an ATM to get some cash, and the lady said she would hold my stuff.  As I went to go to my car I noticed a Ceramic bust  there.  I picked it up, and looked at it (it was marked) and have a price tag of $3 on it.  I took this back to the lady and said to add this to my stuff.  She did.  Ran and got my $$.....and the total for everything I got came to about $25.  With the ATM you can only take out $20 at a time, so I asked if they would take $20 for all the things I got (about 8 things) including this bust.  So even though the Bust was $3, I ended up still getting for only about $1 after she agreed to take just the $20 I had...

Now of course I am really excited....

This bust has a name, and a date of 1871 on the back.  It is ceramic.  It is either the Virgin Mary (and child) or Madonna.  Not sure.  Now I am HOPING that I lucked out and this is not a copy.  I am not sure but I think it is real as a lot of the stuff there seemed quite old, and like it was a collector's (estate stuff) of stuff, different odds, and ends...

Anyways, this is about 16 inches high.  There appears to be a name on the back but I can not make it out.  Now there is a date of 1871 under that name.  It  looks like it was made that way.  I have posted 2 front pics of the Bust, at slightly different angles...

Can anyone identify it, or the name, or the mark?  Is this real?

I thought I better post it first, as I was thinking IF it is nothing -- I could always use in my yard as garden ART --- but better first check it out.  Nothing is broken on her.  The only thing that is wrong is on her one finger is a slight black marker mark.  Mostly likely happened that day as they were pricing items.  Mind be removable (?) But no major chips and marks..all minor.  Excellent condition IF this is as old as stated on the back...

Thanks for any help -- here's hoping it IS what I am hoping it is !!!!  :tup1:

Have been rooting around here for the last hour or so, and I have now found some things -- (I think).  Either the name is Raffaele Monti, OR R. Monty ???

This is what I have found so far:

Raffaele Monti
http://www.christies.com/LotFinder/lot_details.aspx?intObjectID=5306567
http://www.tennants.co.uk/Catalogue/Lots/62183.aspx
http://www.bamfords-auctions.co.uk/BidCat/detail.asp?SaleRef=FAJUNE09&LotRef=429

R. Monty
http://www.nadeausauction.com/lotdetails/?lot=18737
http://www.nadeausauction.com/auctiondata/110096/images/105.3.jpg

So I am not sure what I have here -- or what name it is.  Plus mine has color to is, so ??   :hlp: :hlp:

Just found this so I will add:

Have a look at the first picture in this link here...

Now have a look on yours and see if you can see the same Copeland mark.

Found some info on Monti....

Hi TC -- yea everything is about right, but I do not see the anything on the underside saying Copeland-- So I do not know.  i was going to take the felt off the bottom to see if anything there, but I hated to wreck the felt.

so is it real or not??? Is everything marked ??  So how do I find out.  Plus mine has the Gold colors in it.

I dunno know.....  ???

Rose, I've sent copies of your images to our local saleroom (Tennants as in one of those links above) as they sold one of the Monti Madonnas recently, and have asked for their opinion based on the photos. Will let you know what they respond.  :x-fingers:
Cheers!

Auction house has replied...

I am afraid the Monti piece is a more modern slip cast (?) example, of decorative appeal, but little worth.
Sorry!
... so not what we hoped for Rose.  :kissy: Hope you're not too disappointed.

But a big thanks to Tennants of Leyburn for such a quick reply!
Cheers!

Ahhhh, Rats......but I kinda figured that when all the other ones were white, and this had the Gold trim on it.

But hey, You just never know.  I never saw that till I got it home anyways.  When I bought it I was thinking I could use in my yard.....so no lose, no gain.  Still will keep on looking for that treasure -- that's all.  I still love this item,  and I do not think I will put outside (just in case) down the road. it is found out to BE some lost, unknown item... ;D :24: :24:  It is still very pretty, and too pretty to put outside

Hey win some, lose some -- but the Hunt, and the research is the funnest moments anyway.  You guys will just have to wait a bit longer for me to get over there (for a spot of tea) ....LOL

That OK.

Thanks Ann and *Tennants of Leyburn* for helping us.  One just never knows.  This item is still a :tup1: :tup3: :tup1: to me...
